Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving. Colossians 2:6-7

I’m struck by the way thanksgiving flows out of the life we live in Christ. As I consider preaching this text I’m seeing that thanksgiving flows out of:

My Connection to Christ

Being Rooted in him – perfect tense, completed action.

My Commitment to New Life

Built up on Him – present tense – an ongoing process

My Community of Faith

“Established in the faith” – NIV “strengthened” – also present tense – a continual process. It’s what we do when we come together.

Paul continues from here with a series of warnings and encouragements. Curtis Vaughan observed, “The present passage may imply that those who lack a deep sense of thankfulness to God are especially vulnerable to doubt and spiritual delusion.”

I’m curious about your thoughts as these ideas come together. Please feel free to leave a comment.

Thanks!
